The length of the catheter is measured in inches. Catheter lengths differ for men versus women and children because of the relative difference in length of urethras.
The diameter (or thickness of the tube) is measured using the French catheter scale. “French units” (Fr) are commonly used to measure the outside diameter of needles, catheters and other cylindrical medical instruments. The size in French units is roughly equal to the circumference of the catheter in millimeters.

Medicare, the Veterans Administration and the FDA all agree that catheters should NOT be re-sterilized and reused, as a standard rule to lower your risk for urinary tract infections.
Medicare, Medicaid* and most other insurance plans allow you to receive up to 200 catheters per month. The quantity of catheter supplies you are allowed is based on your doctor’s prescription and meeting the medical requirement of your insurance plan’s medical policy.
*Some states, and some insurance plans, do not allow up to 200 catheters per month. Deductibles and co-payments apply. Patients are responsible for payments not made by Medicare and/or insurance. Contact ActivStyle for specific information on your benefit plan.
